What Customers Say About Canon PowerShot A590IS 8MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom:

takes great pictures but it eats batteries very quickly. rechargable batteries do not last but 10 min.

This is a great camera for the everyday person. The only downfall is the delay it sometimes has when trying to take multiple pictures. It's lightweight and simple to use. The zoom features are great. Perhaps there are other features that I could use to change that, but I don't feel like taking the time to try. Asides from that it takes great pictures.

Was hoping to get at least a couple years out of this camera, the pictures were great and everything but the LCD on it broke after the first year.

I've not seen other cameras with that ability. Cameras with special batteries can be a pain if you forget the charger, or run out of power in the middle of an event. You can go directly to VHS tape if you wanted to, or have a monitor running during your work to simplify aiming and shooting. I can preview them as I scan down the list.

I have one also in my desktop at home, so accessing photos IS A BREEZE. It comes with software if you want it, but in my high-stress work environment, I need the pics and I NEED THEM NOW. It comes with optical and digital zoom, as well as the cool Macro mode (I keep calling it Flower Mode since that's the symbol on the button) which I use a lot in my work. I have used the camera both for work projects to photo-document machines and testing, as well as fun events like car shows. It does use regular AA batteries, which is a real plus when traveling.

For video, it is best to get a high data rate card. The supplied SD card is very tiny at 32MB and slow. Think of it as the difference between USB 1 and USB 2. An unusual COOL feature is the 1/8" phono jack which continuously outputs an NTSC signal which can be viewed on any standard TV with an RCA video input jack. The video capability is nice to have as well to make small movies.

I upgraded to a high-speed SanDisk Ultra II 2GB card with 15MB/second rate to capture movies. This has got to be the easiest to use digital camera I have ever used. Be sure to budget in for a new SD card and possibly the AC adapter. The great thing about the card is that most Dell laptops now have an SD reader.

NO SOFTWARE REQUIRED. When they created these memory devices as "drives," that simplifies so much. I also recommend using the 640x480 size for easy drop-in into WORD documents.

It is very hard on those AA's, so I would budget in an AC adapter if you do indoor shooting. So many people leave the cameras on their default settings wihtout realizing that the huge file sizes clot up WORD documents without improving image quality. My favorite feature is the memory card.

Remember that not all SD cards are created equally. Opening an explorer window is perfect. This is a great product; I'm very satisfied with it and it was very economical with a lot of features.

When I researched this camera in-store, the A590 I handled DID NOT require any batteries in addition to the standard AA's, nor did the user guide included with the camera mention anything about this additional battery.I might have actually bothered to return the camera simply due to this lack of disclosure, but this wouldn't have remedied the disappointment of a 13 y.o. My PowerShot has been 1/2 way around the world and back, run over by a car and is still taking great shots.BEFORE buying this camera, would have also said that battery life is also a plus, as I much prefer AA batteries when traveling: you can recharge as needed but can always grab some at a corner store if you absolutely need to in a pinch. After researching current PowerShot models (on-line and in-store), I bought this A590 from Amazon for my 13 y.o. I have owned a Canon PowerShot for many years, and find the picture quality and ease of use to be superior in this price range ($100 - $150). boy.Has anyone else received an A590 with a similar issue.I still love the Canon products overall, but am unsure why the camera we received was not as described (by both Amazon and Canon). brother to take with him on his 1st trip to Europe - a school trip to London & France. How very disappointed when, 4 days into his trip the camera 'went dead.' It turns out we received a version of this camera from Amazon that required an additional WATCH-TYPE BATTERY FOR THE LENS.THIS IS NOT MENTIONED ANYWHERE IN THE CAMERA SPECS. I am currently researching new cameras for an upcoming trip. I do not feel comfortable buying a camera again from Amazon due to this issue - how can I truly be sure that what I am buying is what I receive.do I want to be in a remote Italian village when my camera dies for some unknown reason.
